Celebrities, drugs, and home videos

Amy Winehouse has been accused of smoking crack in a video which was recorded in her home and posted online. The video can be seen here. It is believed to have been shot in her home in east London. During the video, Winehouse states that she just took six Valium pills. The singer from the UK has had a history of drug and alcohol addiction. With her well known song "Rehab," Winehouse belts with all her might that she is not going to rehab. Celebrities dealing with serious addictions is apparently not a new craze. The show Dr. Drew's Celebrity Rehab showcases many prominent celebrities trying to overcome their addictions. Perhaps Winehouse should check in there so what she won't feel so alone. Either way it goes, this is very depressing to see. Amy Winehouse is a young musician that has very recently crossed over to the United States. The irony of the situation is this: her proclamation that made her famous about not going to rehab is the same one that is going to potentially be her downfall!

The question is, why does this make the news? There are numerous people on drugs around the world everyday. What makes her situation any different?

Andrea-

I am really not shocked to say the least. In my opinion, shes always looked like a drugged up girl from the beggining. Over all a good piece and well written. And for the questions, I believe she gets all this attention becuase as you said, she is infact now a pretty up and rising singer and star now in the us. And that puts you in the spotlight and we all know when your in the position there is a microscope on you for the whole ride. Average people who are drugged and have those problems dont make the news because there not already in the news like pop stars and celebrities. Also, lets remember, as you said, it is ironic that the name of her hit song is "rehab"...could be another tag that brought attention.

I like it!

Man, this is all kind of sad to me. For I still remember jamming out to her song, "Rehab" with my good friend Paige at work. Amy is one of the few artist from the UK that is doing pretty good in the U.S. I think it would be a good idea for her not to take her own advice in not going to rehab, as she sang in her song, but to check into a celebrity rehab pronto. She as well as all of the other celebrities just get free press off of their addictions. Hearing of a celebrity getting admitted to a rehab faciltiy has turned into nothing but the norm. But I guess this is the latest fad for celebrities. It has seriously become some form of "pitstop" that one must take in order to become part of the lifestyles of the rich and famous club. The only thing that we can learn from Amy is this: if you are going to do drugs, and by some chance of fate you become famous...DO NOT VIDEO TAPE YOURSELF.

I always wonder why this stuff makes news. I'm a fan of Amy Winehouse and it is sad to see her this way. I guess the reason why celebrities like Amy Winehouse makes news because she is this talented, celebrated singer that is well-known for her song. Sadly, some media likes to kick them down a notch or two in the public's eye. Regular people with serious addiction don't make news because they are not as newsworthy as celebrities.

This does not shock me at all. I mean first of all why would you put that on video? Clearly it is going to get out in the open. Everytime you turn on the news there is a breaking story about a celebrity on drugs. This is what people want to see. They want to watch what is going on in Hollywood. She gets all this attention because she is a celebrity. You do not see everyday people on the news for doing drugs because people do not want to know about it. You brought up a good point about her song "rehab" and how that is where she might end up. It is stories like this that take a way from the important news. These days it is hard to say what exactly is important news.

This is no surprise. I mean she wrote a song about rehab. I think that the only reason she is getting attention is because she is somewhat famous. I don't think that her fans should be supporting this. She needs to go back to rehab. It's really sad that these people put themselves out there, and now this media is only going to make her situation worse.
